Did you recently astonish after looking at your photograph? Your skin tone becomes uneven, and you are concerned about it? Don’t worry, and you can easily change your skin tone in the picture by following a few simple steps using Photoshop. I believe some of your portraits will become breathtakingly beautiful once you adjust the skin tone and make it smooth. Below I will show you a few procedures to change the skin tone using Photoshop. I am pretty much sure you have Adobe Photoshop installed on your computer already. So, why doing late? Let’s begin

Enhance Skin Tone from Dark to Light

Step 01

Firstly, open Adobe Photoshop. Simply go to Menu bar option and click Select > Color Range

Step 02

Here you need to select Skin Tones option from the drop-down menu. This selection will ensure that from each next level, your body color will change only, and other area colors will remain the same. Don’t forget to click OK to same your settings and close the window.

Step 03

The next step is to select the Filter option and go to Convert for Smart Filters. This option is preparing your image for the next level as a smart object.

Step 04

Now, select Filter > Noise > Reduce Noise. Here I am recommending to change the settings as per below

Strength > 8, Preserve Details > 16%, Reduce Color Noise > 0% and Sharpen Details > 4%

Finally, you completed the task, and your image skin tone is already changed. Have a look at both images. I believe there is a lot of difference between before and after image.

Keep in mind:

1. The settings will differ every time based on the skin color and volume of light available in the image.

Continue your experiment by changing the noise% as well. I believe you already started and think the above instructions helped you a lot to enhance your skin tone using Photoshop.

Enhance Skin Tone from Dark to Light

Next, we will learn about changing the skin tone from dark to light or light to dark using Photoshop. To do so, I will use layer masks and adjustment layers. Let me write up the process

Step 01

Open your desired image to change the skin color. Now simply shoot Ctrl + J to create another layer of the picture.

Step 02

Now carefully select all the skin of the image. To do this, choose the Quick Selection Tool. To determine the skin area, simply click on the image and drag it.

Did you select any other area? Don’t worry, the remedy also there. In this image, other regions are hair, eyebrows, and eyes. Press and hold key Alt, then click and drag it to remove the extra areas.

Step 03

Right-click on the image and select Refine Edge.

Smart Radius needs to be turned on and drag the bar to set Radius and set it to 5 pixels. Keep Refine Edge window open and if the skin color and hair color dwindle into each-other, paint the hair color. Thus your image will look more natural.

From the Adjust Edge option, drag the bar significantly slow and set it to 0.5 pixels and alter Shift Edge to 25%.

Step 04

Now go to the bottom of the Photoshop panel. I just made a selection and shot the add layer mask button from the panel to create a mask.

Step 05

Do you know the Create Clipping Mask icon? The icon contains a box and an arrow sign. Now, you need to create a New Level Adjustment Layer using this icon. Simply follow Properties > Create Clipping Mask icon.

Put 1.75 at the middle stop and black spot to 0 and white spot to 225. Hence, you can change the white spot as per your requirement. This selection will improve the skin tone to bright.

You need to create a Curves Adjustment Layer and give this layer a Clipping Mask too.

Change the curve to deepen the highlighted area. Remember the point values. 1st point values are Input: 180 and Output: 165. The 2nd point values are Input: 200 and Output: 205.

Step 06

Now go to Hue/Saturation option. This option also needs to be adjusted. Also, don’t forget to give it a clipping mask. Put Saturation -10, drag the bar to do this.

Step 07

Again, generate White and Black Adjustment Layer and offer it a Clipping Mask too. A few little adjustments are required in this section. Set Red tone to 55 and Yellow Tone to 220.

Step 08

Blend mode required adjustment. Select the first option means Black and White from Layer Panel, Set Layer to Luminosity, and the Opacity to 35%.

Step 09

Produce a Color Balance Adjustment Layer and give it a Clipping Mask. For the Mid tones, put the Red value to +8 and the Magenta to -7. Confirm you checked Preserve Luminosity.

Step 10

This step is the only step where you don’t need to give it a Clipping Mask after creating a Hue/Saturation Adjustment.

Alter the Hue to -10 and the Saturation to 15.

Give it a Layer Mask if it doesn’t have one already and fill it with Black. Using a soft brush, paint white on the Layer Mask just over the lips.

Step 11

Generate a Curves Adjustment Layer. Swell a point and grind it up and to the left to enhance the image until you can see the color and details within the eyes.

Provide it a Layer Mask and seal it with black. Using a white brush, paint on just the irises of the eyes.

Step 12

Again, generate a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer. Set the Hue to -160 and the Saturation to -65.

ALT + click and drag the Layer Mask icon for the irises from the previous layer onto the new layer to create a replica of the Layer Mask.

Step 13

Choose the background layer from the Layers panel and with the Quick Selection tool, click and drag to create a range of the hair and eyebrows.

Right-click on your selection and select Refine Edge. Follow the same process as we did in Step 2 to soften your choice.

Create a Curves Adjustment Layer, which will automatically use your selection as a Layer Mask. Adjust the curve to brighten the hair until it better matches the skin.

Finally, you have all done and created an image that was skin tone was Black, and now it is white.

Correct Red Skin Tone using Photoshop

The red tone is quite irregular and spreads on different areas of anyone’s skin. This red tone does not look good in a photograph. Due to this, it is quite time consuming to remove the red tone of a face from a picture. Hence, quick options are available in Photoshop to save time.

Now, the next tutorial is on how to correct red skin tone using Photoshop. Let’s start and follow step by step

Step 01

Open your desired image with Adobe Photoshop. Firstly, you need to add the Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer in this image. Then alter to the Red option that placed at the second drop-down menu.

Step 02

Now, give an in-depth look at the panel. You will find 3 sets of Eyedroppers near to the down part of the Hue/Saturation panel. Below that is the Color Range panel. Both will work in tandem to support you segregate colors that will be exaggerated by this modification layer for Reds. Choose the first eyedropper and test one of the red spotty skin. Accordingly, the color variety will change with the sample color.

Step 03

Now, give an in-depth look at the panel. You will find 3 sets of Eyedroppers near to the down part of the Hue/Saturation panel. Below that is the Color Range panel. Both will work in tandem to support you segregate colors that will be exaggerated by this modification layer for Reds. Choose the first eyedropper and test one of the red spotty skin. Accordingly, the color variety will change with the sample color.

Step 04

An essential part of this process. In the Color Range area, there are only two sets of limiters on each side of the incredible color range. The two small boxes at either end are the whole perimeter of artificial colors. Next to these boxes are longer rectangles that show the amount affected.

You only need to play with this color change limiter.

Shrink the artificial color until the red-toned skin appeared lightly. You can simply give a glance at what is affected in real-time because the Hue slider is to the left. If you were to do this while the Hue slider was still at 0, you would not know what portion of the skin is going to be moved.

Step 05

Once you are OK with the area that you look to correct, rearrange the Hue slider back to 0 and flinch moving it incrementally to the right until the red skin starts to balance in with the rest of the healthy skin. At this point, a Hue amount of 15 successfully modifies the red skin. You can also alter the Saturation and Lightness Slider as required.

Step 06

This step is to fine-tune the image. Few areas such as lips got affected by this color change. As you don’t want the Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer to create the effect on specific areas of the image, then you need to use a Layer Mask and a Black Brush to mask off the fields. In the below image, masked off is required because there is a red tone in the subject’s iris as well as near the tear ducts. So, the fine-tuning is all done.
